Alexandra is a densely populated and diverse ward in the centre of Oldham, which has experienced a 20% increase in estimated population between 2011 and 2018. This is much higher than the Oldham wide average increase of 3.9%. It has a high proportion of residents of Pakistani heritage compared to the Oldham average and a high proportion of residents under the age of 16 compared to the Oldham average. Since 2001, this ward has become younger and more diverse due to the growth in its South Asian communities.
Alexandra is one of Oldham’s most deprived wards and has the third lowest median household income in the borough. There is a higher dependency on out-of-work benefits (16.6%) than the Oldham average (11.0%). Levels of employment (46.7%) are lower than the Oldham average (58.2%). Around one in four are employed on a full-time basis.
Alexandra has a higher proportion of single person households (34.5%) than the Oldham average (30.3%). The proportion of lone parent households in the ward (18.6%) is higher than the Oldham average (13.1%) and the proportion of households overcrowded in the ward (12.4%) is higher than the Oldham average (7.5%).
Alexandra has the highest reported rate of Anti-Social Behaviour in the borough. The overall rate of reported crimes is higher than the Oldham average. Police intelligence suggests a fall in the rate of reporting. New crime recording standards have changed the classification of certain offences, meaning comparisons over time are not possible.
