wigan

Wigan is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas.  The towns of Bolton to the northeast, and Warrington to the south are 10 miles (16 km) and 12 miles (19 km) away respectively. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Wigan is the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and its administrative centre. The town has a population of 107,732 and the wider borough of 330,712.

Wigan was incorporated as a borough in 1246, following the issue of a charter by King Henry III of England. At the end of the Middle Ages, it was one of four boroughs in Lancashire established by Royal charter.

Wigan Pier, a wharf on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, was made famous by the writer George Orwell. In his book The Road to Wigan Pier, Orwell highlighted the poor working and living conditions of inhabitants in the 1930s. The DW Stadium is home to Wigan Athletic Football Club and Wigan Warriors Rugby League Football Club.

Local Issues

Clean Air Zone

clean air zone

Political awareness was recently jolted into a state of being ‘wide awake’ as the Metro Mayor Andy Burnham announced the roll out of the Greater Manchester Clean Air Zone. (CAZ)

With signage going up all over the Metropolitan area, growing anger and frustration resulted in the formation of a Facebook Group called (RETHINK the Clean Air Zone – Greater Manchester).  It soon attracted many thousands of new members to the group and became a focal point for resistance against the LABOUR Mayors scheme.

Unsafe Streets

unsafe streets

Safe Streets are becoming a distant memory with the incessant rise of street crime and it is easy to allow yourself to slip into ‘armchair mode’ as you read about violent knife attacks on our once safe streets.

Street muggings, knife attacks, car theft, drug dealing and the most hideous of them all, the sexual assault and rape of lone women, in broad daylight on our streets.

Fly Tipping

fly tipping

As the relocation of asylum seekers and refugees, continues apace! With the private, rented sector, in most deprived towns booming. The finer detail and impact of fly-tipping, failure to observe basic recycling procedures, continues to be ignored, by most, if not all local councils.

The outcome can be seen on almost every street in Oldham and indeed every other street in neighbouring boroughs as the fly-tipping explosion continues to grow and grow.
