Bryn, Wigan
Bryn is a component ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It is part of the larger town of Ashton-in-Makerfield and is geographically indistinguishable from it but forms a separate local council ward. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 11,662. Served by Bryn railway station, Bryn is home to the Three Sisters Recreation Area which has been created from three large spoil tips which remain from Bryn’s role in Lancashire’s coal mining past.
Bryn has a mix of affluent and deprived communities. Some areas appear within the top 30% most deprived areas within the Indices of Multiple Deprivation. Just over half of all areas rank within the top 50% most affluent areas in England.
13.9% of residents claim out of work benefits, below the borough average of 15.9%. The community is relatively healthy with 7% of residents describing their health as ‘bad’ or ‘very bad’ compared with the borough average of 7.1%.
75% of residents either own their homes outright or have a mortgage, 14% of households live in social rented accommodation. Bryn can be accessed via the Wigan to St Helens (320), and Wigan to Leigh (600) bus services which run every 15 minutes during peak times. Bryn also has its own train station and is on the Liverpool to Wigan Line.
