Orrell is a ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England.
The population of the ward had fallen at the 2011 Census to 11,513. The centre of the area lies 3 miles (4.8 km) to the west of Wigan town centre and serves as a predominantly residential suburb of Wigan. The area is contiguous with the district of Pemberton.
Historically in Lancashire, Orrell was a centre of the coal mining industry, though today no evidence of the area’s industrial past is present.
Orrell has a resident population of 12,244 which represents 3.7% of the total Wigan resident population of 330,712. The community of Orrell has an older demographic with 22.3% of all residents aged 65+. This is the highest proportion across all 16 communities and significantly higher than the Wigan average of 17.6%. 14.6% of households are aged 65+ and live alone compared with 11.7% of the borough households.
Orrell has affluent communities with 3 out of 7 areas appearing within the top 30% most affluent in England. These include the communities of Far Moor, Gathurst and Greenslate. 9.1% of residents claim out of work benefits, below the borough average of 15.9%.
