Standish is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, it is on the A49 road between Chorley and Wigan, near Junction 27 of the M6 motorway. The population of the village was 13,278 in the 2011 census. Formed around a crossroads, the village has grown as urban expansion between Manchester and Liverpool extends outwards. St Wilfrid’s Church is a Grade I listed parish church.
Standish has a resident population of 12,832 which represents 3.8% of the total Wigan resident population of 330,712. Standish has a slightly older demographic with 19.9% of all residents aged 65+ compared with the borough average of 17.6%. 12.8% of households are aged 65+ and live alone compared with 11.7% of the borough households.
Standish is an affluent community with 7 out of 9 areas appearing within the top 30% most affluent in England, these include Bradley Hall, Woodhurst Drive, Wigan Lane, Ashfield, Shevington Moor and Pepper Lane. However, there are some pockets of deprivation such as Standish Centre and Standish North. 8.5% of residents claim out of work benefits, below the borough average of 15.9%.
80% of residents either own their homes outright or have a mortgage, only 10% of households live in social rented accommodation.
