Wigan West is an electoral ward in Wigan, England. It forms part of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, as well as the parliamentary constituency of Wigan.
Wigan is midway between the two cities of Manchester, 16 miles (25.7 km) to the south east, and Liverpool, 17 miles (27 km) to the southwest. The towns of Bolton to the northeast, and Warrington to the south are 10 miles (16 km) and 12 miles (19 km) away respectively. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Wigan is the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and its administrative centre.
The town has a population of 107,732 and the wider borough of 330,713.
Wigan has a slightly older demographic with 18.8% of all residents aged 65+, higher than the borough average of 17.6%. 13.5% of households are aged 65+ and live alone compared with 11.7% of the borough households.
Two out of sixteen of Wigan’s communities are ranked within the top 10% most deprived in England. These include Scholes and Beech Hill West. Two out of sixteen are ranked in the top 20% most affluent in England. These include Whitley and Whitley Lane. 15.2% of residents claim out of work benefits, below the borough average of 15.9%.
65% of residents either own their homes outright or have a mortgage, only 19% of households live in social rented accommodation.
